Richard E. Haftel has been a litigator for nearly 30 years. Prior to starting his own law firm in 1988, Mr. Haftel practiced law at Shea & Gould, where he was an associate in the Litigation Department. He began his legal career as an Assistant District Attorney in the Appeals Bureau of the Bronx County District Attorney’s Office, where he tried cases, wrote scores of appellate briefs and argued more than 50 appeals in the Appellate Division, First Department, and also in the New York Court of Appeals and Second Circuit Court of Appeals.

In 1988, Mr. Haftel left Shea & Gould to form his own firm. Mr. Haftel had learned that the more thoroughly he knew his clients and their businesses, the more effectively he could position them in litigations. This knowledge, coupled with Mr. Haftel’s experience, contacts, and tenacity, enabled him to obtain remarkable results for substantial clients within the first few years of opening his own firm. For example, in 1989, Mr. Haftel obtained an appellate court reversal of a $2 million fine imposed on a New Jersey solid waste hauler, and in 1991, he won an appellate reversal for MCI of a trial court decision upholding an administrative ruling that favored AT&T. These early successes earned Mr. Haftel a reputation as an effective advocate who was relentless in obtaining for his clients results that matched their business objectives.

Mr. Haftel graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (B.A. 1978, with Honors) and American University, Washington College of Law (J.D. 1981, Cum Laude), where he was an Editor of the Law Review. He was admitted to practice in New York in 1982.
